It works here because Mitchell was not being discredited on the technical merits
of his testimony - i.e. he wasn't a very expert "expert". Mitchell's
problem is that his prepared reports clearly stated one thing, which did not
help Oracle, and on the stand he reversed himself to support Oracle, saying his
carefully prepared written materials were a "mistake." That goes to
his fundamental credibility - that he's not an independent expert but a hired
mouth to say what Oracle wants, and that could impeach *all* his testimony, not
just this particular piece.
