This discussion reminds me of the time my eight-year-old daughter stood gazing
at the blinking block cursor on a VT100 terminal for a few minutes and then
asked me, "Is that the same little box used over and over again, or does
the circuit make a new box for every blink?"

Of course you guys have a better grasp on APIs and ABIs than she did of rasters
and ROMs, but the difficulty of presenting a short answer to a long question is
similar.
