Umm, *developers* do have the freedom to move their programs from platform to
platform. They have the freedom to move their program from Windows to UNIX
too.

*Users* might have trouble moving from J2ME to Android though. Which is a whole
different issue.

Haven't read Gosling, but since PJ mentioned his name here today too, and in
line more or less with what you're saying here -- isn't he bascially a free-in-
life-limb-and-thinking biker type (i.e. a true son of Sun-like-it-was)? I say
that with all deference to the man.

I could understand his allegiancy is more with Sun(-that-is-no-more) than with
Google. On a personal note: I don't have one iota with advertising either
(don't even own a television -- glad to be without it).

Gosling's attitude was probably deeply rooted in misgivings over the "UNIX Wars". The feeling was that vendor API incompatibility hamstrung Unix adoption as a whole. So it was paramount that Java be a single, non-fragmented platform. (Which was a laudable goal, even if it couldn't be legally enforced.)

Of course this promise never held true in the mobile space.
