A new group, led by Oracle and Sun, seek to link their frameworks in an effort to offer an alternative to Microsoft's IDEs.

Several leading Java tool vendors are building an organization to link their respective frameworks in an effort to offer an alternative to Microsoft Corp.s .Net framework and Visual Studio tools.

The group, to be called the Java Tools Community, was initiated by Oracle Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. and looks to create an interoperable Java ecosystem of tool frameworks based on open standards, according to the projects sources.

Deeply buried in another comment thread, found by an anonymous poster on archive.org, here is the original source, a report of the USPTO from 1994. Mr. Baxter, then Oracle Senior Vice President for Product Development, begins talking on p. 23. http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/com/hearings/software/sanjose/sjhrng.pdf
