What about libraries?
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, May 21 2012 @ 09:41 PM EDT

An exercise in determining library compatability<p>
select all apache projects that are libraries and not applications.
<br>
how many can be used without or with minor modifications in an android
application. The actual number would not be insignificant.

Arguably portable library interoperability is more important than portable programs.

All Java programs depend on the Java API's

All Android programs depend on the Android API's including the 37+ non android.* stuff.

Many Java and Android programs depend on the Apache HHTPClient libraries. How many? Easily 100,000's if not millions.

A program has a short shelf life soon to be replaced or updated.

Good libraries enable the development of millions of programs. Good libraries are more important to the long term viability of a software product than the product itself since products have to adapt and innovate to remain relevant. Libraries enable development organization's to establish stable software component platforms that the variable part of the software product is built on.

What about libraries? (Oi Judge!)

I think I just made this same point in responses higher up,
but it bears repeating.

And just in case the "Hi Judge" thread is on point, then I'd
like to say that *this* aspect (including the count of Apache
libraries) is way more important than considering whole
programs and applications.

I don't think the judge is showing his amateur programming knowledge. I think he
does know this stuff (at least to some degree).

The key is that the court does not know these things. By asking these questions,
he is getting answers that are understandable in court and have a legal basis
(e.g. note his reference to Sega/Sony w.r.t. interoperability).

If something is not in the court record, it cannot be understood by the court.
The evidence needs to be presented, submitted and recorded.
