Well, on the one hand, they need that in order to be able to give you the
documents back.
On the other, I know I won't be using it. Google have so much potential for
doing really nasty things already that I'm worried what will happen when the
leadership changes.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

FWIW, I use Truecrypt to encrypt what I leave on Google Drive. If they want to
use my stuff, they'll have to work for it.

To host, store and reproduce: means to make backup copies of
your data so there is no inadvertent data loss. Wouldn't you
want your files to be reliably backed up?
To modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting
from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so
that your content works better with our Services): means you
can translate your English (or any language) into 45+ other
languages using Google translate. If you publish or share
your data, anyone viewing it can request a translation via
Google. Even though "derivative works" and "adaptations"
sounds like they are going to take your novel and make it
into short stories, that is not what this statement is
covering.Translations are, by nature, an interpretation and
adaptation. No two languages have similar construction and
ideas. Indeed some languages are so apart that translation
means conveying the original idea in an entirely different
construct.
To communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display
and distribute such content: anytime you share your data
with Google+, twitter, your friends, your circle, you are
pretty much authorizing Google to do all of this.
Speculating about ominous management changes is all very
entertaining and conspiracy-theorist (like the NYT did a
couple weeks back) but the ground reality is Google cannot
afford to change its policies, given its current customer
base. That is what makes is extremely different from
Apple/MS/FB/million other companies. Their culture and
policies are completely different.
Now, if some evil spawn like Oracle were to buy Google,
things could change. But you and I are going to liberate all
our data from them before anything like that happens. Which
of course brings me to the more important point: if you are
so paranoid, you could easily spend some effort and set up
your server and manage all the services you need. Nothing's
stopping you, except perhaps time and a bit of effort.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
