Programmer doesn't mean expert, necessarily.
If someone is self-taught, they would certainly understand the basic stuff one
needs to do in order to write and debug software, and probably understand things
like strings, arrays, and other similar things, but would they be aware of more
esoteric concepts like doubly linked lists or stack-based operations if they'd
never played with linked lists or stacks?
An introduction to such data structures is part of the first year core
curriculum in most computer science programs, but I don't think I had actually
encountered those ideas in the several years I spent putzing with BASIC and
FORTRAN before going to college.
Of course, it's possible he's done more than just a little putzing with
programming over the years.

Boies seems like he is in the deep end any time a tech question comes up but the
other Oracle guys are a bit more savy.
Van Nest seems to have a very good understanding as he is always quick with and
answer and with one possible exception seems have gotten all the answers right.
I bet he would be a fascinating person to have a conversation with.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
