There is a theory that Yellowstone (a Caldera Volcano) is traveling under
"harder rock" than was above it during earlier eruptions. Some are
saying that the reason why it is overdue to erupt, is because of this
"safer" rock mass?
However, if it goes, it would be a species affecting event.
Note - that Krakatau volcano is, like Yellowstone, is also a "Caldera
Volcano" (a massive lake of Lava below). With it's 535 AD eruption, the
sea rushed at the phase 3 stage, creating a lot of power (and a big bang that
was heard as far away as China maybe) and a lot of steam that went up, up, up a
long way, and froze, stayed aloft at a high altitude (in small crystals), that
then circled the earth, blocked the sun.
Yellowstone, would not have that "water" rushing in to make it more
powerful. There would be a lot of ash, and Sulfer Dioxide, then a stronger
"acid rain" as the result.
Rainier, would just blow off it's top big time (worst case), local affect would
be greatest, and affect would be less on the whole earth than Yellowstone, or
Krakatau (or another Caldera Volcano, as there are more than just those two).

If Yellowstone goes, four or five states dissapear.
The ash cloud will erradicate the survivors of the lava.
