I'm not disagreeing with anything you said. But in addition, simply talking to
somebody can sometimes clarify things.

I remember a repeated occurance in graduate school (in a technical area). I
would be beating my head against the wall (*usually* figuratively :-) about
something I couldn't figure out. I would go to another student and ask for
help. As I was explaining what was perplexing me (the setup, prior to the
actual question), all the sudden the "light would go on" and I would
understand what had been perplexing me. Before the other person had a chance to
say thing. I saw this repeatedly and from both sides. (I.e. sometimes I was
the one seeking help and sometimes the other person was seeking my help.)
Conclusion: sometimes simply discussing things can be hugely beneficial in
clarifying that which is murky.
