There's an article running on geek.com in which the site is apparently offering
the Nokia Lumia 900 phone at 50% off it's latest discounted prices... so that's
down from $99 to $49 for anyone taking an new AT&T contract.
I'm not sure of the impact of the subsidies placed against handset prices to
entice consumers to go with the AT&T network, but it did seem a little
strange to see a phone that was only released in January being discounted down
to $49.
What do our US Groklawrians think of that as a pricing strategy? Is this largely
to be expected, or is it an indication that perhaps the 900 isn't shifting in
quantity and thus someone is maybe buying themselves a slice of the handset
market with a loss-leader?
I know I'm being cynical, but any guesses as to who might consider such a
strategy?
;o)

"Motorola may have to pay dearly to get the ban lifted."
says
Jon Brodkin of ArsTechnica - May 18
2012
The import ban stems from a December ruling
that the
Motorola Atrix, Droid, and Xoom (among 18 total
devices) infringed the patent,
which Microsoft says is
related to Exchange ActiveSync
technology.
UPDATE: Motorola sent us a response noting that Microsoft's
initial suit asserted nine patents, which were whittled down
to just one.
"Although we are disappointed by the
Commission’s ruling that certain Motorola
Mobility products
violated one patent, we look forward to reading the full
opinion to understand its reasoning. Motorola Mobility will
not experience any
impact in the near term, as the
Commission's ruling is subject to a
$0.33/per unit bond
during the 60 day Presidential review period. We will
explore all options including appeal."
Note* The
infringed patent is 6,370,566, "Generating
meeting requests and group
scheduling from a mobile device."
Sounds like rocket science - lol.

So, the Facebook IPO went ahead, with investors hoping for a new road to riches
in the largest tech IPO ever.
It seem the stock came and went.. well, nowhere.

Could the questions concerning the legality of Facebooks' extreme user-tracking
business practices have soured the milk?

Spring has finally returned to the southern hemisphere on
Mars, and the
rover Opportunity is on
the move
again, though still a little lethargic after it's long
winter
semi-hibernation.
At this point it has logged 21.35 miles (34,365.04
meters) since its journey began in the Meridiani region of
Mars where it
landed in January 2004.
It's short term goal now is to check out a
bright-looking
patch of what may be dust, and some mineral veins. Upon
arrival
at rim of Endeavour Crater in August 2011 it had
discovered a vein of gypsum.
Who knows what it may discover
next?
I don't think I have missed a
single episode in the epic
journeys of the mars rovers since they touched down
on the
Red Planet over 8 years ago. All through this we are given
sporadic
reports with tantalizing tidbits of discoveries
made on NASA's website, but in
depth interpretation is saved
for journals like Nature and Science. These we
never get to
see unless we have a subscription or access. Then we have to
wait
for some press release for more details or until the
mainstream press picks up
on the published research.
Sad that science bought and paid for by the
tax payers of
the USA is not made freely available.
