The more people use google services, the more google learns about their users
and can thus target adds specific to their interests, needs, locations. This is
how google make their money.
And just like the PC, an android phone is just another platform that allows this
learning to happen. More android devices using google services, more learning
about the users occurs and the more google can potentially earn.
How much profit can be attributed to android phone users is anyones guess but my
view is that oracle deserve non of it as google make nothing from the phone
sale.
Was this income connection and some apportioning between androind and other
platforms discussed in any depth during trial? Is it in anyway relevant?
Googles long term strategy may stem from a recognition of mobility and a
subsequent migration away from the desktop computing. As such google needed to
find a way to have people continue to use their services and android phones may
have provided the mobility users they wanted access to.
But unlike other locked phone os's, an android phones os can be modified to
remove google services and replace with their preferred providers. If and
individual wishes and has some technical ability they can do the mods and others
could then use this 'de-google' customizations. Phone manufacturers are also
able to de-google their phones if they desire. Such are the benefits of open
software.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I see text ads in my Google Maps app from time to time. I also see sponsored
links in general search results from the search widget. They seem very
interested in keeping the Google interaction uncluttered so as not to damage
their or Android's brand.
Even if you don't see those ads, conceivably they could be gathering information
to personalize advertising to be displayed later, which is not inconsistent with
how they roll. Even an opportunistic sampling of coarse location data on the
order of once per day could be useful in targeting advertising.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
