NATO & Patents

A thoughtful post, to be sure, but you have undoubtedly heard of the Open
Invention Network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Invention_Network) among
other such entities. The problem is that many patent trolls exist *only* to
litigate and collect on patents, with no inventions or assets of their own to
protect.

The proprietary software players are like Iran, Pakistan and North Korea when it comes to patents. A patent NATO with those guys wouldn't get off the ground. FOSS already avoids patent aggression, so they don't need to be in NATO, and in fact the proprietary players are the problem, not the solution. They are not only not interested in FOSS's survival, they are using patents to destroy its chances.

So, no, it wouldn't work.

Gads. I saw your use of the word "FOSSIL" and my brain instantly
autoconverted it to "Fido Opus Seadog Serial Interface Layer" when
reading it.

It made no sense in context, but that didn't stop it. :-)
