Fortunately, it's not too draconian (yet) but at least now in the UK you are
supposed to be "a competent person" if you do any electrical work.
Replacing "like with like" is currently exempt, which is fine by me.
But having had my daughter electrocuted (mild shock, fortunately) thanks to
someone else's stupidity, I'm pleased that at least people now have to show they
know something.
Someone (probably not the old dear with alzheimer's) replaced the fuse-wire in
the old dear's fusebox with ordinary wire - which sent the plumbing in my
daughter's bathroom live! She got rather a shock in more ways than one!
Her landlord's electrician got into the flat below, found the problem, and
walked off with the fuse ... the old dear got a new consumer unit with circuit
breakers in pretty short order.
