I was thinking much the same
Authored by: red floyd on Monday, May 14 2012 @ 03:52 PM EDT
This has to be apocryphal.

1. Physicists weren't responsible for targeting. Politicians, military, and
engineers were.

2. Even if he was responsible for targeting, as a guy formerly involved in
artillery control software, such targeting requires accounting for Coriolis
force, which would not be required on a flat earth.

The Earth *is* flat
Authored by: argee on Monday, May 14 2012 @ 11:28 PM EDT
I've flown thousands of hours in airplanes. It all looks
perfectly flat to me.

I've seen boats go "over the horizon", but I've also seen
them rise up in the air. It's all diffraction. No proof
there.

What I want YOU to do, is to PROVE it to me that the
earth is spherical, not flat. I bet you can't.

We had this discussion in the local cafe. A guy spoke
up, "When you are in a spaceship, you can see the
curvature of the earth!"

And I replied, "That is not proof, that is hearsay. I
want YOU to take ME up on a spaceship and SHOW me."

It's been years. No one has yet been able to prove me
wrong: The Earth Is Flat.

(I don't really believe that. I believe it is a sphere,
but it is strictly on faith, there is no proof before me.
If you want to take me on, be prepared to come up here
to show me. I don't want you to refer me to some text or
some essay, video or photo. I want YOU to show ME).

;-)

How did he manage that?
Authored by: Wol on Tuesday, May 15 2012 @ 08:44 PM EDT
He used two-dimensional geometry - cartesian co-ordinates. Then the world is
flat, no problem.

The world appears three-dimensional, it is four-dimensional (we think), and it
can be described in two dimensions.

Take your pick.

Cheers,
Wol
