I am using the dictionary definition of symbol
Authored by: Ian Al on Wednesday, May 16 2012 @ 01:39 AM EDT
noun

1: an arbitrary sign (written or printed) that has acquired a conventional
significance.

2: something visible that by association or convention represents something else
that is invisible; "the eagle is a symbol of the United States"

I start with logic gates, as did you. There is a symbolic definition of what 0v
and 5v (approximately) symbolise for TTL. Negative logic makes 0V equate to '1'
and 5v equate to '0'.

In many communication protocols, the expression of symbolic values is far more
complicated, but it abides by the dictionary meaning of symbol.

I am consistent with this dictionary use of the word throughout my analysis. If
computing science use is inconsistent with the dictionary definition, then you
must explain that difference and explain why it changes the meaning of phrases
compared with the dictionary definition.

That is what claim construction is about so it is important for patent court
cases.
