The symbolic references ARE in the .class file. Just not in the instructions
themselves.
Javac puts them into a different part of the file, called the
constant pool.
In the instructions (the bytecodes) it uses numeric indexes
into this
constant pool. So there are still symbolic references, and they
still get
resolved dynamically (at runtime) by the Java VM, they just aren't
in the instructions, the way at least some of the patent claims

It may be that it was practiced "way back when" to be able to
