"messages" sent around internally in the code are functional.
"messages" written in human language that convey information to humans
could conceivably be protected by copyright.
In other words, an error code of 1442134 is not protected, but text printed on
the screen saying "This program has detected that the printer has caught
fire" just possibly might be. Both are "messages" but it is
wrong to mix them up. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

To say that Exception "is" a message is to invite confusion. An Exception can
have an (explicit) message, a String, supplied to its constructor, and has a
method,
public String getMessage()
for retrieving the
message that was provided to its constructor. If you say an Exception is a
message, then what do you call the Exception's message retrieved via
getMessage()?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
