About 35 years ago, I was sitting in a courthouse in Manhattan, waiting through
a delay of some sort, and conversing with a court reporter.
The conversation turned to reputations.
I mentioned that the litigation partner for whom I worked had told me not to
follow the usual custom when litigating a matter with one specific law firm.
When I got a telephonic agreement for an extension of time on some matter of
motion practice from this one firm, I should keep right on working on the matter
until I had a signed stipulation in hand.
There were a LOT of law firms in New York City.
The court reporter immediately identified the law firm involved.
(This raises an interesting question. Have I sufficiently impugned the
reputation of those lawyers to have committed libel by telling this story?
Although I have not named the firm, they could claim that I have written this
anecdote "of and concerning" them.)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
