It's more like copyrighting musical phrases and phrase groups.

'Jingles' (short musical phrases) can be copyrighted. In fact, it would be
foolish for an ad agency or company not to. Song titles cannot be copyrighted,
nor can the names of sections in a multi-part musical work. In music, it's the
_melody_ that's copyrighted. It's the particular arrangement of notes in a
piece. Even chord progressions (the sequence of note combinations that support
the melody) cannot be copyrighted. I can copyright a song that uses the same
title and chord progression as a previously copyrighted song.
I see the APIs as similar to the titles of various sections of a musical piece:
"ODE TO PJ"
1st Movement - Allegro, A Minor
2nd Movement - Moderato, C Major
3rd Movement - Andante, D Minor
This is sort of like a specification for the composer; a list of tempos and
keys.
