customs vary
Authored by: IANALitj on Wednesday, May 09 2012 @ 07:46 PM EDT
I have no idea what the custom is at Stanford.

I attended Stanford's rival, the University of California at Berkeley, fifty
years ago. The custom there was to call professors Mister (or whatever
honorific was appropriate for women), rather than Doctor or Professor. Most,
but not all professors at Berkeley had doctorates, but some did not, for example
the professor who was the conductor of the University Chorus.

The custom may have been different for professors who were medical doctors; I
don't know.

The only people I remember being called "doctor" at Berkeley were
physicians at the campus hospital and the temporary substitute director of the
Glee Club. He had retired from a long career at another institution, and
brought with him his nickname, "Doctor Mac."
