Nah, if they actually cared or believe it was important for Oracle not to behave
this way, they would not have joined the company in the first place. Oracle
always had been like this.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

There was a joke going round 20 or more years ago. It went
something like this:
Three women were talking about their sons.
"My Frank is doing 5 years for fraud."
"My Johnnie is doing 8 years for armed robbery."
"My Pete is doing 12 years for rape."
"What about his brother?"
"Oh, he's an Oracle salesman - but we don't talk about him."

Since they own an OS themselves (SUN's Unix).
Java, and a hardware platform.
If they destroyed everyone else, including FOSS, then they would be happy to
offer refuge to those afraid, with their products.
The real problem with this case, is even if Google gets it's fair use, then the
infringement of copyright and patents, would affect a broader range of other
programers, and what would stop Oracle from going after (via lawsuit) even the
costomers of their competitors that Oracle thougth were infringing (who Oracle
would say had no fair use or other reason as an escape from being
"infringers")?
Even if the case against Google looks like an arrow shot at only Google, it
actually is a shotgun that will hit the entire FOSS and software development
industry if Oracle were to prevail. Only place to develop software, would be
outside of the US court's reach... and that would not be very good at all for
the US economy.

Well, if anyone asks me what DB tech to use at this point,
I'm going to say to avoid Oracle's RDBMS like the plague. If
I'm asked to benchmark, I'm going to use the most unfriendly
bench I can to Oracle.
There are so many choices, and lets be honest, Oracle hasn't
had the "best" one for quite some time. People use it
because they are familiar with it, not because it is really
better than the rest. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
