Actually, Oracle's problem is that they will not be able to justify their buying
Sun for the amount they paid any more if they don't get "billions" out
of this lawsuit. So I don't see how this will make Oracle any
"happier".[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Oracle took massive pain in the "dotcom" crash.
Multiply leverage then with leverage in 2007 and leverage now.
Ask yourself what comes next.
When did they buy Sun?
How much of $7.4 Billion is "goodwill"?
How diligent is 3 days?
The whole world is going through a process of de-leverage.
Who is going to make the margin call when ORCL market cap collapses when Java it
turns out is worth 0$
Where did Oracle get $7.4 Billion ?
Nobody wants to be left holding the baby.
Or is it possible to find someone else to foot the bill?
Apple/SteveJ(GRHS) has his tax on Music/Movies via the i<Thing>
MS/BillyG has his institutional tax on "computing" .
What exactly has leisure suit Larry got?
This is not investment advice
This is not legal advice.
I have no idea what I am talking about
If you act on this it's your own fault.
I'm just thinking out loud.

I'm not saying it was actually a good idea. I'm saying that is the ROI that
Oracle's lawyers and board are looking at. Unfortunately, Oracle is no longer
(in my humble opinion) a tech company. They are now just a conglomerate looking
to maintain the status quo for as little effort as possible.
Litigation is expensive, but licensing is a lot less expensive than actually
making a good product, and it's a lot easier to keep the bottom line up if you
either (A) litigate competitors out of the market or (B) failing that, take a
percentage off the top.
Just ask the Mob, it's a lot easier to take 5% of someone elses business profits
to avoid 'accidents' than it is to build your own business and compete.
And in answer to another poster, yah, I consider Oracle no more than an IP troll
at this point. And this is from someone who used to make a living implementing
Oracle Applications.
