Just Way Off

It doesn't matter that methane is produced from CO2 and H2 that may have been in
the atmosphere previously - what matters is that methane is different to CO2 and
H2, it provides about twenty times as much greenhouse warming as the same amout
of CO2. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas.

The carbon is being transformed from CO2 via photosynthesis to
polysaccharides, then in the animal's gut to gaseous methane.
In a "balanced" ecosystem the herbivores would release only enough
CO2 to match that photosynthesised by plants.

If we're in green baiting mood there's an argument that says the
CO2 released by burning wood has less greenhouse effect than
the methane that would be produced if we left the wood for
forest floor critters to digest.
