'core' (or basic) is not in the Java spec, is it?
Authored by: BJ on Sunday, May 06 2012 @ 04:45 PM EDT
Therefore why play this game?
Everything is 'core' or everything isn't and is equal.

Btw., how can 'images, media' (for example) be 'core'.
Someone, define 'core'. Define 'basic'.

SCO JDK
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, May 06 2012 @ 05:26 PM EDT
I think that basically boils down to java[.exe] and rt.jar
plus dev tools for JDK (javac etc)

(I believe JIT is 'embedded' in the JVM/java[.exe])

Docs and demos for JDK pls

Runtime only for JRE

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't Sun JDK 1.1.7 + variants
with maybe some minor modifications to make it work on SCO variants, License
appears to be SCO.

Remember in 1999 downloads were *slow*, many people were still 'internet'
connected via 57.6Kbaud modem, and there is a huge difference between
7/14/39Mbytes at ~5mins/Mbyte

so this kind of bundled/unbundled distro was the norm.

Do not conflate source code with byte/object code

The same wording is in a Sun document in the
same folder. And it says you need the APIs
to run Java, the core ones.
