The issue of whether or not APIs are copyrightable shouldn't be this hard to answer...

They shouldn't be that hard to answer, but the concepts involved are hard to understand unless you have a background in computer languages and computer history.. along with a reasonable amount of mathematics (advanced algebra and an introduction to sets).

I believe this could identify the abstract nature of computer programming, and the limits of how copyrights can apply (as well as how patents don't apply).
