Lots more than just Java.

As someone who has sold things second- (and third- and fourth-) hand a few
times, there's something very important to keep in mind when putting a price on
something:

The price is what other people are willing to pay you for it now.

It has absolutely nothing to do with what you paid for it originally. This is
especially true if you paid too much (that "goodwill" thing so the
ledger will balance).

Anyone with a 3-year-old computer knows this one: you may have put $2000 of
original purchase and upgrades into it, but good luck getting more than $200 for
it today. If it's a beige-box system, keeping the power supply (if it's got the
right voltage rails and connectors) and chassis can be worth it... if you're
going to build your own again.

My first DSLR, a bargain at only $1000, was worth maybe $50 (based on a quick
survey of eBay sales and local camera shops) when it was upgrade time. Not even
worth the effort; so I kept it 'cause it's always handy to have something you
don't mind getting broken.

So, just because Sun was worth that much TO ORACLE, doesn't mean Sun was
actually worth that much at the time--and it certainly doesn't mean it is worth
anything at all now.

Let's face it, if Sun was doing well, they wouldn't have been up for sale.
