Solving non-linear least
squares problems comes up in a broad range of areas across science and
engineering - from fitting complicated curves in statistics, to constructing 3D
models from photographs in computer vision. Today we're happy to announce the
release of a solver we use at Google.
Ceres Solver is a portable C++
library that allows for modeling and solving large complex nonlinear least
squares problems. The notable features are: • A simple, expressive API •
Automatic differentiation • Robust loss functions • Local
parameterizations • A threaded Jacobian evaluators and linear solvers •
Dense QR factorization (using Eigen) for small
problems • Sparse Cholesky factorization (using SuiteSparse) for
large sparse problems • Specialized solvers for problems in 3D computer vision
• A liberal license (New BSD) • Scales from servers to cell
phones.

Looks like there are some more filings in Oracle v Google. Following are some of
the interesting ones:
1037 - ORACLE'S MOTION TO EXCLUDE PORTIONS OF THE RULE 706 EXPERT REPORT OF DR.
JAMES KEARL
They basically want Google's deduction of expenses struck from Dr. Kearl's
report.
1041 - RESPONSE (re 1037 MOTION to Strike ORACLE AMERICA, INC.S MOTION TO
EXCLUDE PORTIONS OF THE RULE 706 EXPERT REPORT OF DR. JAMES KEARL
Google's response to 1037
1043 - Brief re 1007 Second MOTION for Judgment as a Matter of Law on Sections
of Count VIII of Oracle's Amended Complaint
Google's brief in support of its Rule 50 motion.
1044/1045 - MOTION for Judgment as a Matter of Law Oracle's Corrected Rule 50(A)
Motion at the Close of Evidence

When gangs break the law they arrest the individuals
involved, usually those at the lower levels.
A great deal of effort is made to catch the bosses but they maintain
deniability, never give direct orders, or put it in writing.
Since corporations want to be treated as persons when will we see a Board of
Directors locked up rather than just face fines?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The X Factor
by KEVIN CAREY on MAY 2, 2012
Today, Harvard University jumped on the accelerating online
education train. The creation of edX in partnership with MIT
marks the latest development in what’s shaping up to be a
fascinating contest between the nation’s leading research
universities and its most ambitious private-sector
entrepreneurs for domination of virtual higher education.
