Illinios Amazon Tax ruled illegal
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, May 02 2012 @ 07:19 PM EDT
Illinois are correct in that they are owed the money (I assume they have the Use
Tax law like most states) but it is not the seller they need to go after, it is
the buyers. If you purchase something from out of state you are still
responsible for paying Use Tax on it if no state Sales Tax is collected. There
may be an amount that is exempt before you have to start paying the tax, but
compliance amongst buyers is slim to none (and waaaay closer to none than slim).

I heard some state, I think it was New York, had filed a suit or something to
get Amazon to give them a list of all purchases sent to that state along with
the purchasers name. I'm guessing that was so they could go after all the
scofflaws that haven't paid their Use Tax. I haven't noticed anything lately so
I don't know what came of that.
