Traditional mainframe transactional processing, with static SQL embedded in
assembler, C, COBOL, or PL/1 using 'EXEC SQL' statements... right alongside
embedded calls to CICS using 'EXEC CICS'. Been there, did that in 1980. Still
lots of it still being used, keeping the world running smoothly.
Along comes dynamic SQL, and all the other ways to access databases (even on
other systems).

If GP is insinuating that Oracle could just use another language, it may be true
from a programming standpoint.
But their customers would be VERY unhappy if they had to rewrite all of their
SQL-based in-house software to something else. So if SQL is copyrightable in the
US and the owner of the copyright sues Oracle, they might just have to pay up...
This said, the whole thing screams "take me to the Supreme Court", so
it might take a while until we see a definite answer ;-)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
