Linux Fud Machine Returns
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, May 02 2012 @ 01:53 AM EDT
One point struck a chord, never underestimate the numbers of
enterprise apps that require XP and or IE6. If a shop already
has a number of Macs they may have sufficient Citrix licenses
to cover a few Linux extras. But those people won't fix something
they don't see as broken. Some of those apps are as deeply
ingrained as COBOL. Don't expect any fast moves.

Linux Fud makes it to Slashdot
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, May 02 2012 @ 02:27 AM EDT
Is it just me or does it seem that in the last few months a steady increase in
the number of Slashdot posts include the following themes of

"developer use of GPL reducing"
"linux is failing on the desktop"

Is there no safe harbour from trolls and astroturfers?

Linux Fud Machine Returns

According to a quick wiki search at least* linux has even less of the desktop
market than the 2-3% or so MS does in the mobile market. It's not FUD to say
that's a flop. Linux is a good OS (and the article says that too!), but nearly
no one is using it on desktops.

I think the cost point in the article misses that the real cost is in license
administration, not licenses themselves. This is an incredible headache. Other
than that it's pretty accurate - it only takes one program not being available
natively/stupid activex site/whatever to make moving away from windows a
significant mess.
