I can't make sense of this. Does this have a substance, or it's just a bunch of
hot air? The article sounds scary, so I decided to bring this to everyone's
attention.

Apple Tightens the Screws
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, May 01 2012 @ 09:12 PM EDT
I went to Apple's AppStore this morning, logged in,
found what I wanted, proceeded to checkout, Whoa!

To improve the security of my transactions, and help me
in case I "lose" my account details, I am invited, no,
compelled to provide answers to three, yes three
"security check" questions on data like the color of
my first car, and the name of my dog. Oh, and provide
an alternative email account for communication with me
in case my nominated account is compromised.

Now if I was buying a product I can carry in my hand, I can
still go to a shop, pay cash and walk away. The trader doesn't
know or care who I am. If his service and product is good
I'll probably come back for future business.

There are other software online stores whose only sin is spam.
Is Apple just suffering from an influx of bozos with their
increased sales to tired Windows Weenies?

Someone wake up the jury please.

Most of the world has been up for hours now, and we want to
know the verdict!

UK to make academic research available free on the net
Authored by: tiger99 on Wednesday, May 02 2012 @ 08:12 AM EDT
BBC

This is BIG, although there is no guarantee that it will happen yet.

"Giving people the right to roam freely over publicly funded research will usher in a new era of academic discovery and collaboration, and will put the UK at the forefront of academic research," he said.
Yes, clear thinking, unusual for a politician. The "right to roam" shows that he is thinking of the very successful (IMO) legislation which sorted out access rights in the countryside.
"The challenge is how we get there without ruining the value added by academic publishers."
Well, I don't think they have ever added any value at all, but he has to say that, and try to keep them happy.
If implemented the action is likely to mean huge cost savings for academic libraries.
Precisely!
Their representative body said that the UK's higher education sector currently spent about £200m a year accessing UK-based and international research published in journals and databases .

"We think it will drive innovation and work out cheaper for the UK as we are presently paying a lot on duplicating access to materials," said Research Libraries UK's executive director David Prosser.

"It would also bring wider benefits to the economy as biotech firms and other small start-ups would find it easier to access research."
Can other small startups please have free access to other things, such as standards, too?
Springer, Elsevier and Wiley are the three biggest companies set to be affected by the shake-up.

None were able to provide comment when contacted by the BBC.
No surprises there. The parasites are speechless.....

We don't do politics here, but I wish the government well with this one. The FOSS community should be watching this, as the prevailing climate in government may favour them (us!) too.
