Barnes and Noble Misdescribed - PJ article needed.
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, April 30 2012 @ 04:59 PM EDT
The Barnes and Noble settlement seems to be misdescribed. B&N will not be using Windows on devices, despite what many articles say. They will be getting a very high placement for their app in the Windows interface. The original Nooks will continue with Android. Here are the items in the settlement in order of value (high first) as I understand it.
  • B&N promises to terminate lawsuit (!!!)
  • 300 Million cash from MS to B&N
  • Future patent licenses fee per device from B&N to MS
  • Equity holding from B&N to MS
  • Commitment to deliver app for Win8 from B&N to MS
  • Good app placement from MS to B&N
  • Dubious patent license from MS to B&N
That looks like a pretty low interest loan of 300M dollars from MS to B&N to me. What is missing in my picture? We really need a proper analysis on the publicly available data on this case. PJ or Mark; if you can, an article analyzing this would really be appreciated.

LG backs off Windows Phone
Authored by: Gringo_ on Monday, April 30 2012 @ 10:55 PM EDT
"LG backs off Windows Phone for now, report says Analysts say LG is likely interested in next generation Microsoft OS, Windows Phone 8"

OK - and who are these "Analysts"? Inquiring minds want to know. It looks like spin to me, because I am sure LG isn't selling enough WinPhones to pay their development costs. Remember when Elop was bragging at year end about what percent of the WinPhone market he gained? (As if that had any meaning.) I think it was as much as 70%. So since the market for the WinPhone was pathetic to begin with, imagine how it must be for the non-Nokia manufacturers. I am sure they rue the day they ever even thought about making a LosePhone.

Wozniak: Windows 7 Phone More Beautiful than iPhone

PJ commented:

“To me the Windows 7 phone looks like it's for really old people who can't see well any more.”
Perhaps that's exactly why he likes it so much? ;-)

Social Network snooping on non members

I have often wondered about this when I look at all the sites that I have marked
as 'untrusted' with noScript.<P>
Facebook, Twitter etc are blocked at my firewall but the number of hit counters
and their ilk seem to be multiplying. One site I visit quite frequently(no, not
pron) recently underwent a resedign. Now their front page calls out to 32 other
sites when loading. That is just silly. All 32 are now 'untrusted'.

Ubuntu & 'apt-get' are not the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything which
is of course, "42" or is it 1.618?
