Sure, MS did buy themselves out of a losing case.
But it is unlikely that they will try another case, because now any potential
opponent knows that MS will buy them out eventually.
I predict there won't be any more of these lawsuits from MS over Android.

Just like politics. We have the best government money can
buy. Same for the legal system.
No, you cannot buy the courts (hopefully we can bet on
that); but you can buy your way out of the legal system.
And the prices here are kept low, since cost of establishing
what is "right" are exorbitant. It's not the $300M offer
that convinced B&N to settle, but the perspective of their
legal costs over the next ( N | N>>1 ) years *combined* with
the $300M offer. Not everybody has pockets deep enough.
Napoleonic Code should be a tad more efficient.
The legal systems everywhere are plagued by the lack of
formal semantics.
Wouldn't it be nice if the Oracle lawsuit would simply
generate a "
ECOP0054 Error at line <...>, no registration
ECOP0020 Error at line <...>, not copyrightable
EPAT0017 Invalid patent
"
Life would be a dream...
