Bad news. Microsoft bought themselves out of a losing case...
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, April 30 2012 @ 05:16 PM EDT
Basically, Microsoft bought off B&N and prevented losing in court so their
patent extortion racket can carry on as normal...

This is very bad news for Android devices... someone else now has to go into bat
to kill the Microsoft extortion racket and you can bet your very last Dollar
that Microsoft will not make the same mistake again in thinking they had an NDA
in place which prevented the mark from disclosing what patents were involved...

OK, but NOT great...

++ The law suit is over. B&N no longer bleeding legal fees.

+ No money to MS. Net loss after legal fees.

+ B&N equity position improved.

+ B&N continues to offer Android based device.

+ B&N _not_ a MS 'partner' in the usual sense.

o More content available through B&N. MS tech info will be more available.
Useful for the industry as a whole, but it increases the mass of MS offerings.
Net change is probably neutral.

- MS influence on B&N board increased.

same deal that brought down yahoo and how many others?
Authored by: designerfx on Monday, April 30 2012 @ 08:48 PM EDT
the "we give you money upfront, and you give it back over time
with almost no benefits to you and plenty to us" deal?

how many companies need to have this to know this is an
absolutely godawful deal?

I feel betrayed
Authored by: skyisland on Monday, April 30 2012 @ 10:41 PM EDT
B&N fought the good fight, and the had the truth on their side.

Now we're left another capitulation that perpetuates the myth that MS owns
Linux.

Newco?
Authored by: s65_sean on Tuesday, May 01 2012 @ 06:59 AM EDT
Wasn't that name (Newco) used by Caldera/SCO during their transformation from
Caldera to "The SCO Group" along with other intermediate company
names, such as SCO International (or something like that)?

Is this where SCO plays their endgame and sues MS and B&N over the trademark
for the name Newco?

Barnes and Noble Misdescribed - PJ article needed.

What happens with the DoJ? If anything, this deal (ironically?) strengthens
B&N's anti-competitive arguments. But are they likely to proceed without
B&N pushing it?
