You are talking about the user interface of a car: wheel, pedals etc, and how
there would be chaos if everyone did it differently.

Chaos is not a criterion: most certainly you can patent an inventive new user
interface and demand royalties for others to use it.

But here we have right now
a) nothing really inventive in the API. "Well executed" is orthogonal
to "inventive".
b) a copyright angle of a case.

And this so does not fly. We'll get to the patent angle later, but
a) there will not be much patent left to haggle over
b) I have serious doubts that the patents cover the _API_ rather than the
implementation
