I've been hanging in with Unity for several months
Authored by: hardmath on Thursday, April 26 2012 @ 11:54 AM EDT
I'm more comfortable with Unity after puzzling over several
"how do I..." moments.

I used to feel at home asking questions at ubuntuforum about
stuff. I'm not sure why, but it has a more locked down feel
now, e.g. I can't update my profile. The atomosphere is
less hospitable, though I suspect that it may have been
changes intended to make the forum more civilized.

I don't plan to leave Ubuntu for spite, but it's time to get
out and try some different distros as well. I downloaded a
two DVD install for Scientific Linux to try out on my next
machine.

Also friends have started bringing me laptops that will not
boot Windows anymore because of excessive cruft. I may find
a use for Mint or similar to keep them happy with the user
interface. Nothing is worse for a user than feeling they
just can't figure out how to do what needs to be done.

"So your burst of hatred is kind of moot." That does not seem very
objective for a person that said they stopped using something years ago.

I have been using Mint LMDE 12, based on Debian. It has worked well for me.
Easy to use out of the box, no need to spend time on line or in forums trying to
figure out how to use it.

I used Ubuntu for the previous several years, but guess I don't have the
intellect to figure out how to make the new interface functional for me.

I do have a bias, I am old and don't want to learn a new way to do what I can
already do. My computer is a PC. That means it is a Personal Computer, mine.
I get to have it my way. Others that like the new looks of Gnome and KDE get to
have it their way too. That is the beauty of Linux.

“Ubuntu has Unity as default desktop environment, but it allows you to use others as well.”

Yes, you can use different desktop environments on Ubuntu, but I'm not sure why I, for one, would want to. My gut feeling tells me that Ubuntu really wants to be an exclusively Unity distro—period. Which is fine if it works for them, but that doesn't mean that it will work for me (or for anyone else) as well.
