I keep installing Ubuntu in Virtualbox just to try it out. I
keep feeling that I already have a tablet, why do I need a

If you have been hanging with Unity for several months, then you lasted several
months longer than me. I lasted about 3 hours, but so what? If someone
downloads Precise Pangolin and likes Unity, great. Otherwise, take a few
minutes and try a different desktop manager. Unity looks fantastic, but the
operational flow didn't click with me. Until recently, I've been loyal to KDE4
from the get-go (yes, I actually liked KDE4 even in its earliest iterations).
Last month, I tried Enlightenment, though, and I don't making any changes for a
while.
We aren't locked in, and I wonder if some of the drama comes in when we forget
that simple fact, especially if we are used to certain other systems. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I'm not sure I would give a new user Mint at this time. I've got nothing against
the distro in principle, but they are making huge UI changes while trying to
come up with their own unique GUI. Until that's settled down, it's probably a
distro that is more suitable for experienced users who will be able to work
their way through the inevitable bugs.
If you are going to recommend a disto to friends, then I would suggest
recommending something you are personally familiar with so you can talk to them
about it later rather than just giving them a blank look when they ask you how
to do something, or when they want to talk about some cool new feature they've
