All of those either describe or use the API, though. At a basic level, the API
encompasses a set of very precise facts about how to communicate with a computer
program and what it will do in response to your messages.

Whether facts exist independently of any expression thereof is a metaphysical
debate, I think. I certainly don't think they should be copyrightable, though.
And when copying particular bits of some implementation (for example, the SSO
inherent in the names of objects, functions, parameters, etc.) is necessary for
interoperability, making APIs copyrightable could really only be harmful.
