Groklaw Hit counts for the SCO trial
Authored by: symbolset on Wednesday, April 25 2012 @ 11:27 PM EDT

PJ,

At the time of the SCO trial I asked at if these records were kept so we could know how much of an impact Groklaw had on the world at large, and you said you didn't look at it because it might be too intimidating and knock you off your stride, but I took you to say that records would be kept for posterity though I may have misunderstood.

The trial being long past and having now (mostly) hung up your Groklaw hat, would it be possible to ask: if those numbers were kept, what they were? Is it still too much?

I've been following along this whole time as you know, and I feel it's an important part of the history.

UK public sector accounts for bulk of data breach fines
Authored by: tiger99 on Thursday, April 26 2012 @ 07:52 AM EDT
BBC

Note that there was only one fine in the private sector, the remainder were government departments!

The private sector company singled out was ACS: Law. Its data controller was fined £1,000 after failing to prevent a hack attack which resulted in sensitive details about 6,000 people being published on a third-party website.
Regulars will remember reading all about ACS:Law, a particularly nasty legal business which was trying to perpetrate RIAA-style frauds (i.e. largely bogus illegal file-sharing allegations) against innocent people in the UK. The solicitor concerned, Andrew Crossley, was barred from practising law for 2 years and made to pay costs of £76.326.55 by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal, so now he has a further £1000 on top of that for Data Protection Act violations. "Were it not for the fact that ACS:Law has ceased trading so that Mr Crossley now has limited means, a monetary penalty of £200,000 would have been imposed, given the severity of the breach."

He got what he deserved! RIAA/MPAA/BSA please note, and don't bother us in the UK, or else.....
