Oracle's Reality Distortion Field
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, April 25 2012 @ 05:13 PM EDT
I don't think it was clear until the SDK release the extent of the changes
and how far from Java TM Android was.

Sun's management were never regarded as the sharpest unlike their
engineers I think it was a case of CEO reads tech news "Android uses
Java" thinks millions of extra $2.50* license fees and blogs about it as a
win
for Sun and Java. I think the response was too quick to have been
preceded by an engineering or legal analysis. I have seen no suggestion
that Google provided any early access or technical information to Sun.

From memory of what Sun charged for Java on MHP TVs

Oracle's Reality Distortion Field
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, April 25 2012 @ 06:11 PM EDT
As an "innocent" bystander, the rockets on Java seemed to speak to the
publicity and popularity that Android would bring to the Java programming
language.

Java was growing, but the idea was that Android's use of the Java language would
cause the Java language to reach into areas that Java itself had a very
difficult time reaching... The unexplored universe of the cellphone world was
the destination for Java and Android would be the rockets used to get them
there.

It's really not so difficult to read into that.

It's very obvious that Sun knew what has happening, it's very obvious that Sun
approved, and it's also obvious that Sun was excited about the new journey
ahead... Who wouldn't be?

A related distortion: Spring
Authored by: hardmath on Wednesday, April 25 2012 @ 07:42 PM EDT

From yesterday's (Day 7) examination of Eric Schmidt by Oracle:

Oracle: Are you aware of any company that programs in Java that doesn't use the Sun Java APIs?

Eric Schmidt: I'm not aware of any. As far as I know, every company uses Sun's APIs. You might be thinking about the class libraries.

Oracle: Has anyone talked with you about a European company named "Spring"?

Eric Schmidt: No.

Groklawphiles will recall Ellison's Day 2 testimony:
First objection raised by Van Nest over whether Ellison has the technical expertise to answer, "Is it necessary to use the Sun API to run the Java programming Language?", which seems to me to be a badly-phrased question, but it is Boies asking it, so I assume it's meant to confuse the jury :-)

Judge Alsup asked Ellison if he knew the answer from direct personal experience, to which Ellison replied "yes", and the objection was overruled.

Elllison said no, and cited the Springboard Java implementation. [PJ: I see a comment that may help us comprehend what he is talking about.]

The linked comment by Jimbob0i0 contemplates that Springboard should be Springsource. From my examination of their site, Spring Java (the implementation by Springsource) is more of an alternative to Netbeans (an application framework) than an implementation of Java programming without the Core APIs.

Seems like Ellison was prepped with bad info for his testimony, and Oracle's lawyers still don't get that.
