The correct idiom is Programming BY Contrat

"Design by Contract" is the concept that Bertrand Meyer
invented an the name for it that he trademarked for use in
the Eiffel language.

The principle is that the calling feature (Eiffel term for
method) guarantees to the called feature the state of the
objects passed to or used by the called feature. The
contract is that if the called feature receives input in the
specified condition it will guarantee the required result.
The Eiffel language contains keywords that can be used to
enforce the contract (usually this is done exhaustively only
during testing.)
