The grandparent is correct. I've seen a number of cases where GPL software was
modified to extend its functionality and/or rectify problems, but in no case
were the modifications handed back to the parent project since the companies
concerned only used the modifications internally and never distributed them

Yes, rushing. *IF* you decide to distribute, then
you distribute under the GPL, and in that sense
give back. If you never distribute, you don't have
