My mum was not a lawyer - she had no "proper" legal qualifications.

However, she was expected to know the law, was expected to *enforce* the law,
and could have gone to jail if she didn't.

As a qualified Company Secretary, if she had served in the job of Company
Secretary she would have embodied the company in the eyes of the law. I think
this is probably all the stuff about executives and directors - as one of them
you have a legal obligation to know the law, and to answer "I don't
know" to a legal question implies you are failing in your job.

So even as a "not a lawyer", my mum would probably have been
*expected* to make legal points in court if she had ever ended up there.
