Actually what appeals to me about the Judge's method of reducing the case to its
basic parts is...
This is very close to how you do trouble shooting...
That is ask a question that narrows where the problem could be..
repeat...
e.g. does this issue present just on your PC (not on your colleagues PC's as
well).
If yes, then you have hugely reduced to possible number of issues it could be.
Even a no helps as you now know to look for a issue that must affect all users.

The key is to reduce the universe of possible solutions down to something
manageable.
The Judge is doing something similar narrowing down to an issue that he needs to
decide on.
