If they wanted to make the language truly free and open they would have had to
release the Java Language Specification under a free and open licence and, to my
knowledge, they didn't do that.

Hence all the twaddle about copyrighting languages. Oracle stipulated to the
court that Java language is free and now he is holding them to that. They still
argue about copyright and licences for the language which tells me that
absolutely no free and open licence has been issued, so far.
