Fragmented Java?
Authored by: mcinsand on Sunday, April 22 2012 @ 05:46 PM EDT
I don't know whether Minecraft or KoLMafia have passed TCK compliance, but I do
remember reading (but not where) that Oracle had approved OpenJDK6. If I want
to know that either of those applications will run, then I have to use OpenJDK6.
Whether on Fedora, Slackware, or Kubuntu, I could not get them to run with the
'official' Oracle Java (fresh downloads). This is also fairly recent, since
these events happened when was rethinking distro choices with a PC upgrade back
in February/March. One weekend in particular was lost, and I had several users
upset with the downtime resulting from me trying to get Minecraft to work with
Oracle's Java. Since I've gone back to OpenJDK6, it's been smooth sailing.
Minecraft is not a smalltime Java app; it's made Mojang into a significant
player in the gameworld. KoL also has a significant userbase. I don't know how
many players there are now, but there were over 100k players a few years ago.

As far as I'm concerned, for my use, Oracle Java is broken.
