The API is everything you need to have, and everything you need to know, in
order to cause a body of code you are working on to use another body of code
that you are -not- working on, -without- you having to open up and and start
working on that other body of code.

No really.

And the API, as an idea, exists because nobody working here, for any definition
of here, wants to continuously have to go "over there" to work on that
too.

This is doubly true when you don't have access to go "over there"
anyway. Say because you don't have the complete source code to the MS Windows
operating system and you wouldn't to get into all that if you had it anyway
because that isn't work you would get paid for anyway.
