No, I don't think an API is like a map, though I can see why
you might want to draw parallels; it's like a map in the
same way that a novel is a map of someone's life, and you
can see that while there's a little truth in that, it's a
very one-dimensional comparison.
No - an API is like a set of Lego Technic parts that work
together. If it's a good set of parts then you can make lots
of things, and the chain works properly with the gears. If
it's a bad collection then you have a chain, and it works as
a chain, but doesn't work with all the gears, and some of
the axles don't fit some gears. Choosing the right set of
parts was important - a gear without an axle is useless. An
axle without a way of mounting it is useless. And so on.
