Ah yes, the assumption Everyone Has A Zip Code.
You can't even get fuel if you don't have a Zip Code at some stations: the pumps
won't accept card payment without a Zip Code entered. And this is within a
short day's travel of the U.S.-Canada border!
One station was so hopeless, the alleged attendant couldn't accept cash payment.
I had to find a turn-around (it was a divided highway) and backtrack 3 miles...
then find another turn-around to get going in the proper direction again.
(Mind you, I've also been to a U.S. "Full Service" station where the
alleged attendant spoke to the closed passenger window on my car. I couldn't
lower it from the driver's seat--no power windows--and he didn't seem inclined
to talk to the driver's side, so I went somewhere staffed by recent immigrants.
They attendant there cleaned my windshield, filled the tank, and were polite and
courteous. Oh, and I was the only customer at the first station: there were
several other customers at the one with staff actually willing to talk to me.
Big surprise there. Penny and a half a gallon cheaper, too.)
Mind you, the plural of "anecdote" is not "data", but any
time I get nibbles on my resume from the States, I think of these things, plus
the imperial actions of the US Government.
