KEVIN J. O'BRIEN of the NYT
reporting
On
Monday, Moody’s downgraded Nokia’s long-
and short-term debt ratings, citing
its deteriorating
financial position and questioning its ability to
successfully make the transition to Windows from Symbian.
The ratings agency
warned that Nokia might have to inject
more money into Nokia Siemens, which
lost a combined €986
million in 2010 and 2011.
"It is clear that Nokia
is struggling with its smartphone
business, but now it looks like it is also
struggling with
its mobile phone business", said Malik Saadi, an analyst at
Informa Telecoms & Media in London.
The WJS reports
that China [is] at Heart of Nokia's
Troubles
The
only surprise about Nokia Corp.'s NOK -2.23% disastrous
first-quarter figures
was just how disastrous they were.
Having warned everyone that things were bad,
and the ensuing
collapse in the share price shows how bad they were, the
world
knew that CEO Stephen Elop's plan to save the once
mighty mobile-phone giant
was in trouble.
In an ocean of red ink, it is hard to know on what to
concentrate. Nokia has always built its strength on its
appeal in emerging
markets, and while sales were down in all
emerging markets, the vale of tears
in China is a
catastrophic blow.

YouTube said it took no responsibility for what users did, but
responded when told of copyright violations.
"Today's ruling confirms that
YouTube as a hosting platform cannot be obliged to control the content of all
videos uploaded to the site," said a spokesperson for the video site.
"We
remain committed to finding a solution to the music licensing issue in Germany
that will benefit artists, composers, authors, publishers and record labels, as
well as the wider YouTube community," they added.
Gema's court case was
based on 12 separate music clips posted to the website. The ruling concerns
seven of the 12 clips.

I do work from home, I am *not* a “father” when I work. The kids
always knew that if they came in and disturbed me while I was at the computer,
they’d get shouted at. I know some people who say that they could never work
from home because they’d be constantly distracted by their kids – that is just
not the case in our family. So despite me working from home, we’re a very
“traditional” family – Tove stayed at home and was really the homemaker and took
care of the kids.
And don’t get me wrong: when I interact with kernel
developers, there can be a lot of swearing involved. And while that may
*occasionally* happen with the kids too, the kids get hugs and good-night kisses
too. Kernel developers? Not so much.

Ha. Them dastardly so'n'so's (you know who you are) are training birds to bring
down OUR planes. How did they get past the NTSB screenings?!?!?! It's a plot,
I'm telling you! Thousands of bird breeders are now on our terrorist lists. You
can never have too much security!

It's technically off topic, as he doesn't seem to be looking
at the same case
anyway.

As Google itself admits, "[f]or the 37 accused API
packages,
Android and Java 2 SE Version 5.0 have substantially the
same
selection, arrangement and structure of API elements."
There's no ownership
dispute over the copyrights to those
API packages (a fact that Oracle lawyer
Michael Jacobs
stressed when Google made a big deal out of the fact that
some
of the APIs were contributed by community members). So
Google needs a license
to this and other Oracle intellectual
property.
Is it just me or
does the last sentence not follow the
previous in any logical sense?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

"Judge O’Grady informed the FBI that Megaupload was never served with
criminal charges, which is a requirement to start the trial. The origin of this
problem is not merely a matter of oversight.
Megaupload’s lawyer Ira Rothken says that unlike people, companies can’t be
served outside US jurisdiction."
